Date night. The first thing you notice when you go anywhere is the way it looks. This place may not look like much from the outside, but as soon as you walk in the door you can feel it. When you enter this quaint spot, you are no longer a student in here. When I visited The Olive Branch with my partner, we were greeted by a woman who sat us at any table we wanted, and she also happened to be the server. We later found out that not only was she our server, but the owner and chef as well. She genuinely wanted us to love being here. Instead you could spend a fraction of the cost at the liquor store for the entire bottle. Eating my face off???

New analyses that use tree rings could settle the long-standing debate about when the volcano Thera erupted by resolving discrepancies between archeological and radiocarbon methods of dating the eruption, according to new University of Arizona-led research. Thera’s explosive eruption on Santorini more than 3, years ago buried the Minoan settlement on the island in a layer of ash and pumice more than feet 40 meters deep. The effects of the eruption were felt as far away as Egypt and what is now Istanbul in Turkey.

Archeologists have estimated the eruption as occurring sometime between and BC by using human artifacts such as written records from Egypt and pottery retrieved from digs. Other researchers estimated the date of the eruption to about BC using measurements of radiocarbon, sometimes called carbon, from bits of trees , grains and legumes found just below the layer of volcanic ash.

By using radiocarbon measurements from the annual rings of trees that lived at the time of the eruption, the UA-led team dates the eruption to someplace between and , a time period which overlaps with the date range from the archeological evidence. The current radiocarbon calibration curve that was developed over the past 50 years using tree rings extends 14, years into the past.

At that time, the scientists needed to use chunks of wood that combined 10 to 20 years of a tree’s annual rings to have enough wood to test for radiocarbon. Work conducted at the UA Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory contributed substantially to the radiocarbon calibration curve currently in use worldwide. Now radiocarbon testing requires just slivers of wood, so Pearson and her colleagues could test the annual growth rings of trees from back to BC—before, during and after the time Thera was thought to have erupted.

What fell out of that was that the old calibration curve wasn’t precisely correct during this time frame. The paper, “Annual radiocarbon record indicates sixteenth century BC date for the Thera eruption,” by Pearson and her colleagues is scheduled to publish online Aug. Pearson learned about the Thera eruption while studying archeology in college and has been fascinated by the eruption and its aftermath ever since.

By Joe Pinkstone For Mailonline. The ‘cataclysmic’ Minoan eruption of Thera — one of the largest in the history of the planet — took place a century earlier than first thought, scientists say. The ancient eruption devastated the island of Terea, modern-day Santorini, and decimated fledgling societies across the Mediterranean as the volcanic activity also triggered an earthquake and a tsunami in the region. Folklore claims the eruption kickstarted a wave so big it drowned an entire city, creating the mythical realm of Atlantis.

Researchers found an ancient olive branch buried under rocks on the island of Santorini and used radiocarbon analysis to reveal a more accurate date for the destructive natural disaster.

The latest controversy in a bitter archaeological dispute involves—I kid you not—a literal olive branch. The olive branch comes from the Greek island of Santorini, where a volcano erupted more than three millennia ago, spewing gas, ash, pumice, and boulders into the sky. Once depleted, the volcano collapsed in on itself. So violent was the eruption, some have speculated, that it ended the once prosperous Minoan civilization, instigated a volcanic winter as far away as China, and inspired the 12 plagues of Exodus as well as the myth of Atlantis—claims that are to varying degrees controversial.

But nothing is as controversial, it turns out, as the debate over when the Santorini volcano actually erupted.

() Cherubini et al. PLoS ONE. Olive trees are a classic component of Mediterranean environments and some of them are known historically to be very old.

An olive branch that has been used to date the Santorini volcanic eruption could predate the event by 40 to 50 years, according to a study in Scientific Reports. The Santorini eruption provides a fixed point for aligning the chronology of the Bronze Age in the Mediterranean, yet its exact date has been difficult to determine. Recently, an olive branch found buried under rock fragments at Santorini was used to date the erruption to between and BCE, more than a century earlier than the BCE date suggested by archaeologists.

The dating was based on the assumption that the outermost ring of wood was formed just before the branch was buried alive by the eruption. They found that in both cases individual samples, all of which were taken from the layer of wood nearest the bark, could vary in date by as much as 40 to 50 years. The findings suggest that olive trees do not systematically produce visible growth rings and that growth cessation of individual sections of the same tree well before its death is a common phenomenon.

Charred olive wood is abundant in the archaeological record, especially around the Mediterranean. As the outermost ring closest to the bark is assumed to represent the latest time that the tree was alive, the radiocarbon date obtained from the outermost rings of an olive branch buried during the Santorini volcanic eruption is regarded as crucial evidence for the date of this cataclysmic event.

The date of this eruption has far reaching consequences in the archaeology of the Aegean, Egypt and the Levant, and the understanding of their interconnections. In both cases we show that radiocarbon dates of the last formed wood along the circumference are not chronologically homogenous, and can differ by up to a few decades. Thus the outermost wood layer does not necessarily represent the date of the last year of growth. These findings challenge the interpretation of the results obtained from dating the olive branch from the Santorini volcanic eruption, as it could predate the eruption by a few decades.

In addition, our results are also significant for any future studies based on archaeologically preserved olive wood. One important motivation for investigating whether annual growth rings in olive wood Olea europaea are present and can be successfully identified in olive wood arose recently 1 , 2 , as an olive branch was used in dating the colossal volcanic eruption of Santorini 3 , 4.

This dating was based on the assumption that the outermost ring was formed just prior to the eruption.
